Why do dogs pant?

They usually pant to regulate their body temperature. Cooling takes place through the evaporation of saliva during panting, but many dogs also pant when they feel pain, or are tired or ill. If your dog pants while at rest, in normal room temperature, that is always a sign that something is wrong and you should take a closer look.
